A testicular ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the testicles and scrotum. This procedure allows doctors to diagnose a variety of abnormalities, including cysts, tumors, varicoceles (enlarged veins in the scrotum) and hydroceles (water accumulation around the testicles), as well as injuries or infections.
The procedure is quick, painless and completely safe, and usually takes 15-20 minutes. During the examination, the patient lies on a table, and a gel is applied to the scrotum to allow better conduction of sound waves. Then, the sensor is moved over the scrotum, creating images of the testicles that the doctor uses for analysis.
A testicular ultrasound is very effective in detecting testicular cancer, as it allows doctors to see any abnormalities or lumps in the testicles that can be further investigated with a biopsy or other diagnostic methods. It is also useful for monitoring cysts and varicoceles, which can cause pain or infertility.
Testicular ultrasound is also used to monitor the condition of patients who have suffered testicular injuries or surgery, as it provides a detailed view of the condition of the testicles and surrounding structures. After the examination, the doctor analyzes the images and recommends further treatment, if necessary.
