Color Doppler of the head and neck arteries

Color Doppler head and neck artery is an advanced diagnostic method that uses sound waves and colors on the screen to show blood flow through blood vessels.

Duration

20 - 30 minutes

Recommended number

One test, except in the case of monitoring existing problems

Who it is for

People at risk of stroke, neck pain, dizziness or unusual blood pressure

Contraindications

There are no specific contraindications, unless the patient cannot tolerate lying down during the examination.

Color Doppler of the head and neck arteries uses sound waves to analyze blood flow through the main arteries that supply the brain. This test allows doctors to visualize the blood vessels and identify potential problems such as narrowing (stenosis), blockages, or the presence of blood clots, which can increase the risk of stroke or other serious vascular problems.

The examination begins with the application of gel to the neck area, and then a sensor (Doppler probe) is moved along the arteries. The sensor sends out sound waves that bounce off the blood flow and return, creating images on a screen. The blood flow is displayed in color, allowing a clear visualization of the speed and direction of flow through the blood vessels. This helps identify abnormalities such as plaque buildup in the blood vessels (atherosclerosis), which can lead to reduced blood flow and an increased risk of serious health problems.

Color Doppler of the head and neck arteries is especially useful for people who are at increased risk for stroke, such as those with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or a family history of heart disease. The test is also very useful in evaluating patients who suffer from dizziness, fainting, or sudden changes in vision, which may indicate a problem with the blood vessels supplying the brain.

One of the main advantages of this examination is its non-invasiveness and safety. The examination does not require any special preparation and can be performed quickly, without the need for hospitalization. In addition, Color Doppler can help in planning further diagnostic or therapeutic procedures, such as surgery, angioplasty, or blood thinning medications.
