Color doppler blood vessels of the upper and lower extremities

This test allows the detection of problems such as blood clots, venous insufficiency, atherosclerosis, or other vascular disorders that can cause pain, swelling, or reduced blood flow.

Duration

30 - 40 minutes

Recommended number

One test, except in the case of monitoring existing problems

Who is it for

People with pain, swelling, skin discoloration or suspected vascular disease of the extremities

Contraindications

There are no specific contraindications, unless the patient cannot tolerate lying down during the examination.

Color Doppler of the upper and lower extremities uses sound waves to create images of the blood vessels in the arms and legs, allowing doctors to assess blood flow and identify abnormalities. This procedure is especially useful for detecting venous insufficiency, varicose veins, blood clots, atherosclerosis, or other vascular diseases that can interfere with blood flow in the extremities.

During the examination, a transducer is moved along the arms or legs, and a gel is applied to the skin to help better conduct the sound waves. The sound waves bounce off the blood circulating through the blood vessels, and images are displayed on a screen that show the speed and direction of the flow. Blood flow is usually displayed in different colors, which makes it easy to identify areas with abnormalities, such as narrowed arteries or blocked venous pathways.

Color Doppler is very effective in diagnosing venous insufficiency, a condition in which the veins cannot effectively transport blood back to the heart, leading to swelling, pain, and an increased risk of blood clots. This test is also useful for assessing the condition of the arteries in the legs and arms, where atherosclerosis or narrowing of the blood vessels can lead to reduced blood flow and increase the risk of ischemia or gangrene.

This test is completely painless and safe, and usually takes between 20 and 40 minutes. It does not require any special preparation other than the patient relaxing during the examination. Color Doppler of blood vessels can help make important decisions regarding further treatment, including surgery, angioplasty or drug therapy.

The examination is crucial in the early detection of vascular diseases that can seriously threaten the patient's quality of life, and allows doctors to take appropriate measures in time to prevent serious complications such as thrombosis or gangrene.
