Prostate ultrasound

Prostate ultrasound is a non-invasive method used to assess prostate health and diagnose various problems such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or prostate cancer.

Duration

20 - 30 minutes

Recommended number

One test, except in the case of monitoring existing problems

Who it is for

Men with urination problems, groin pain, or a family history of prostate cancer

Contraindications

There are no specific contraindications, unless the patient cannot tolerate anal access.

A prostate ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the prostate and surrounding tissues, allowing doctors to accurately diagnose abnormalities. This procedure is usually performed transrectally (through the anus), where a small transducer is inserted into the rectum to obtain a clear image of the prostate, as this allows for a detailed view of the size, shape, and structure of the prostate.

During the examination, the patient is usually in a side position with their knees drawn up to their chest, which allows for easier access to the rectum. The transducer emits sound waves that bounce off the prostate, creating images that the doctor interprets in real time. A prostate ultrasound can detect an enlarged prostate, abnormalities in tissue structure, and the presence of cysts or tumors.

This test is particularly useful for diagnosing benign prostatic hyperplasia, a common condition in older men, but it can also help detect prostate cancer early. In patients with elevated PSA (prostate-specific antigen) or urinary problems, a prostate ultrasound can provide crucial information about the need for further testing, including a biopsy.

Prostate ultrasound is also used to monitor the treatment of prostate disease, such as accompanying BHP therapy, or to monitor the condition after prostate surgery. In addition, the procedure is painless and safe, and does not require any special preparation, except perhaps advice on urination before the examination.
